Stars and planets flung in orbit
Webb8 apr. 2024 · We’ve detected “hot Jupiters” in scorching, star-hugging orbits around their stars, where a “year” — one trip around the star — takes only a few days. We’ve found a string of small, rocky worlds, all in Earth’s size-range, in lock-step orbits around a tiny red-dwarf star called TRAPPIST-1. Webb16 aug. 2024 · The Webb telescope's many capabilities include “spectroscopy” – splitting the light Webb receives from distant stars and planets into a spectrum, a bit like a rainbow. That would allow scientists to read the types of molecules present in an exoplanet atmosphere. And that means Webb could detect specific types of minerals in clouds.

Our planetary system is called “the solar system” because we use the word “solar” to describe things related to … WebbThe spinning of the star doesn't pull the planets forward and "fling" them. There are some small tidal linking between the star and the planets, but these are not enough to eject planets over the life span of such a star. Altair doesn't have any known planets.
Webb5 aug. 2024 · One such case is that of a planet named PSR B1620-26b, which orbits both a pulsar and a white dwarf. In other words, the two massive objects (pulsar and white dwarf) orbit each other in a tight configuration at the centre of the system, whilst the pulsar planet orbits much further out, and around both of the inner stars. http://spiff.rit.edu/classes/phys230/lectures/planets/planets.html
